My first attempt at video with Sanchin

I am just playing with my camera in hopes of downloading more video in the future.
This video contains two versions of Sanchin...a short one and a longer one. Front and side views available. At least that is what I hope has downloaded. I am an old dog learning new tricks.

I already see where I need to make a few changes in my form.

Enjoy...and I hope to get more video fairly soon. I tend to blow up technology so we'll see what happens.

  1. It is nice (and comforting) to see another "old geezer" take the plunge.
    Cheers!

Jokes aside, very well executed. It is important to leave a record of one's legacy, aside from serving as a learning tool, videos serve as a record of technique, style, and approach.

    Looking forward to seeing more.

  2. Now you just need to do some of those super fast and complex katas to show off ;D

  3. I have a better idea, Mariah...I'll bring the camera to the dojo and you can do a kata!

    Better start practicing...I'm serious.

  4. That is an interesting version of Sanchin. I would be interested in your take on the whipping of the hand/arm prior to pulling into chamber??
Also, the display of Fa-Jing (that bouncing sort of energy you find in Crane Systems that is curiously absent from many Karate teachings) in your performance, what is your take on that?
I have only watched the short version so far, but very nice. Thank you for sharing!

  5. The whipping of hand/arm can be used for a variety of reasons, but the primary is 'sinking' of an opponent who has grabbed your lapel. When whipped back across certain pressure points it will cause your opponent's head to drop down into the range of your opposite hand...which should be loaded with energy.

We also practice Sanchin with the bouncy Fa-jing...right now I tend to favor that, but keep it for students who have developed 'technique' first.

  6. One other note: Many people when pulling the arm back tend to load energy only in the arm...Sanchin is a whole body/mind experience...and the whole body needs to be loaded and coiled...see my be like a spring post.
